Chain slings are used in rigging and lifting. Since they involve lifting heavy objects off the ground, safety has to be prioritised. Note some things you should and shouldn't do when handling chain slings.

Competent Workers

Chain slings should be operated by competent persons. A competent person is defined as an individual who is trained and has become qualified by both knowledge and practical experience. This person should be able to handle the chain sling safely as per the manufacturer's instructions and to detect any weaknesses or defects.

Qualities of a Competent Worker

The competent worker should be able to choose the correct chain sling for a particular job. He or she should consider not only the chain sling but also the load. The mass of the load is a crucial factor. Can the chain sling bear the mass? In all cases, the manufacturer usually rates the lifting equipment to indicate what weight it shouldn't exceed. A competent worker will note this and adhere to the rating. Another important quality the competent worker should have is being able to identify risky situations and apply mitigating controls to avert the likely hazard.

Periodic Inspection

All lifting equipment should be inspected periodically. This is usually in the manufacturer's guidelines. Each operator accessing the lifting equipment, chain slings included, should have the know-how to inspect the equipment. Additionally, there should be a particular individual assigned to the task of inspecting the machines. If you have hired the equipment, the hire company may have its own representative inspect the equipment.

In-Line Shortening

If a chain sling has not been labelled or tagged as safe for in-line shortening, do not attempt. Also, you may find a warning sign on a chain sling stating that it does not have a locking mechanism. Always read all tags before use!

Reeving Angle

Some incompetent workers have a tendency to hammer a reeved chain sling to tighten bights. This is wrong and may cause an accident. Let the bight assume its position.

Proof Testing and Examination

If you happen to have any repairs or replacements done on a chain sling, it is recommended to test it afterward. Also, if there are any missing tags or the tag is not attached to the chain sling, proof testing has to be done by a competent person. This is important to safeguard other workers from injury and the material being hoisted from damage.

Keeping these tips in mind will help create a safe working environment and ensure that equipment is well maintained.
